Advancement Question:

Postby Major_Evil » Mon Jul 28, 2003 4:46 am

I am wondering how advancement works. You need 15 points to go up a level. But do you need to collect up all 15 points then spend them to buy the level, or do you just need to have accumulated 15 points.

For example, if my character recieves 2pp in the first session and spends them immediately on 1 rank of flight. Second adventure I get 1pp which I bank. Third session we nail the adventure and get 4 pp each for doing everthing right. I then spend those 4 to buy 2 more ranks in flight. (so far my total of pp is 7). Next session we get 2 pp which I bank (total is 9 so far). And the last two sessions we get 3pp each, which i spend to buy 3 more ranks of flight. So my overall total of pp is 15 but I have spend all but 3 of those pp on flight. So my question is since I have accumulated 15 pp points do i automatically go up to the next level, or do i need to bank the pp and pay for the new level like a power.

Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Once you have accumulated 15 pp, your PL increases by one. Whether or not you have spent the pp before then does not matter.

I usually have my players bank their points till they reach a new level and then spend them. I find that it evens things out a bit :)

Our Gamemaster would just keep track himself, and then let us know when our PL went up, and then we would spend our 15 points. it worked fine for us, but i think it depends on the game

Really? One of the things I liked about the advancement system in M&M was that it was gradual. I dislike level systems, and M&M avoids all the trouble with them by allowing gradual advancement.
I used to know where it was at, but then they moved it and wont tell me where.

I've been lettting my PCs spend them as they get them, and then once they accumulate enough to be at PL 11, they get to increase any powers or BAB or what not to the appropriate levels. They'll also be granted the bonus Hero Point.

I'm a 'spend as you earn' GM; the players earned 'em, they can spend them as they go, bank them to spend later, or whatever. Up to them.

Same here, I allow players to spend earned power points to improve what they wish up to power level limits. I treat it as training time between adventures.

You just need to accumulate the points. You can spend them when you wish and as the GM allows.
