Champion Rally Mode question

Just looking for rules clarification on the Champion specialization. Does the Champion get the Rally mode benefits themselves or only allys around them as it reads? I guess the question is does the Champion count as an ally when reading that?

I ask because I'm making a defense based leader character so Champion made the most sense but it doesn't read like he will get the defense bonus himself.

Things that affect allies AND yourself seem to always specify as such. So I'd definitely say that Rally mode does not affect the Champion, only his allies.
