[World of Freeport/Bleeding Edge] Continental Questions

Postby bryan.mullins » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:17 pm

Folks,

I'm trying to get a feel for the (vague) history of "The Continent" as I begin preparing to start a (hopefully True 20)game set in this world. I've been reading and referencing the Pirate's Guide to Freeport for historical information about the continent, and I've skimmed the Bleeding Edge modules...but briefly. I have no access to them currently, but I would like to ask if anyone knows where I can find details (if any exist) on two topics:

1) The War of the Crowns: 1989 to 1994 (dates as given in the Pirate's Guide) Is there some more information on this somewhere? Just a little about locations of large battles or even an idea of where the "front" of this war might have been would be good. I get the feeling that I read something somewhere...but now I cant find it.

2)The "Broken Land" Another instance of "I think I read about this somewhere, but now I can't find much..." I'd like to know if there's some more info about this area I'd assume that it belongs to the holdings claimed by the Ivory Ports based on the map, but I'm wondering what kind of support the ports could lend to the inhabitants of this area if the spine of The Towers is imposed between the two. I'd almost say that this area was the major field of engagement in the War of the Crowns, but its not really in between Hexworth and Iovan....

Anyway, I'd love to hear some other opinions from folks who have studied on this a little, used The Continent in their games, or maybe even written for the company....

(timemrick I know you loves some Freeport...what do you think?)

The only Bleeding Edge moduels I own are Temple of the Death Goddess and Dark Wings over Freeport, so my knowledge of background data found in that line is limited. Therefore, the only info on the War of Crowns that I know about is in the Pirate's Guide ("Current Events," page 232).

Presumably the war started along the shared border between Iovan and Hexworth. It's probable that Vorizar got involved in the war not only because Hexworth is an ally (and Iovan an enemy) but because the conflict threatened their access to the trade routes to their southwest (the Freeland River and the road along it).

There are a couple of passes over the Towers. This likely means that the Ivory Ports can send troops into the Broken Lands, but with some difficulty (esp. during the winter). IIRC, this would seem to be supported by the back-story to Dark Wings, which involves a semi-isolated village near the Carrion Swamp.

My first reaction was similar. A border war isn't likely to start anywhere but on the border.

However, I look at that land and the name and think...SOMETHING must be there. Otherwise it would belong to the goblins near there (or to Kizmir). Maybe its about 200 miles of not-too-useful land. I see the Necropolis near there in the Towers that probably has something to do with that...now Ive got to go digging for references.

If I'm not mistaken Bleeding Edge#2 takes the adventurers into the Carrion Swamp and maybe I originally read that as the "Broken Land" instead of the"Carrion Swamp."

"What are the three main Hazards of the Carrion Swamp?..."
Sorry, Princess Bride crossover moment...

Okay

After going back through Bleeding Edge 1-5 and Dark Wings I see that the area north of Siverus is the main area of development for the series of adventures. North from Silverus is Thalburg, and then over the Narrow Pass and on the other side is the Kirsvald. At the very northern terminus of the Ivory Road is Lonely Shore on the outskirts of the Carrion Swamp.

Not really much talk of the Broken Land on the other side of the Towers, but thats okay by me. I can think of something.
