Denerim and other locals...?

Postby umungus » Sun Oct 17, 2010 6:47 pm

We have been having fun with Dragon Age. We went through Dalish Curse and A Bann Too Many.

Now I want to make my own adventures, but the source material is very light. My players have questions about cities like Denerim, they want to know more about the Avvar and the Dalish and city elves.

Will there be more source material about Ferelden in the second box set? I hope so cause if not I can't see the purpose in sticking with the setting...

Would be a shame we really like the system.

I would say get Blood in Ferelden. To quote in the preview:
Blood in Ferelden contains three full-length adventures for the Dragon Age RPG, as well as three adventure outlines whose bare bones can be fleshed out for even more action. The player characters will visit savage borderlands like the Korcari Wilds and Frostback Mountains, as well as facing foes of a different sort in Ferelden's capital of Denerim. The adventures in Blood in Ferelden are suitable for characters of level 1-5 and add a wealth of detail to any Dragon Age campaign. But be warned: There will be blood!

That should give you some background, as well as 6 more adventures to whet the appetite of your players.

There's a bit more details on the Avaar and Denerim in the Blood in Ferelden modules, but, honestly, there isn't a ton of specific detail on Ferelden anywhere. That can be both a strength and a weakness. Obviously the negative aspect is that there isn't a canon answer to specific questions like: what is the population of Denerim, what are all of its districts, etc.

On the other hand, it lets each GM develop the setting the way they prefer. I'm running a PbP game set in Denerim, and basically making up the background, what districts are where, who the major players are in terms of criminal organizations, nobility, merchants, etc. There isn't a lot pre-established, but there is a ton of freedom to make up your own adventures.

I have the Blood In Fereldin PDF. Just not enough info. for me. Cool adventures but not much on Fereldin.

I don't mind fleshing out the fine details to suit my adventures, but I don't want to flesh out everything. If I have to create it all, then what is the point of using a pre- made setting?

Personally, I use here:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Age_Wiki
for any missing info. This is a compilation of all info revealed in the CRPG as well as all the setting info from the PnP RPG. There's a lot of good info there. It still doesn't have everything, you will need to make up some stuff (like I created my own South Reach) but it's got a good starting place.

Denerim:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Denerim

The search feature isn't great but if you hunt around you can usually find what your looking for (a lot of good stuff in the codex entries).

Thanks for the reply Admiral... Those are helpful links.
I wish one of the game designers would chime in and answer.

Am I the only one around here that wants more source material?

The documentation with the Set 2 playtest stated that there was more background material to be included in the finished book.

In terms of fluff and creatures etc there are fantastic things all through this forum including adventures and much more. Combined with the Wiki pages there should be heaps to give you a background for your adventure.

You might also find information on the forums for the computer game Bioware Dragon Age Forum and Grey Wardens website. Grey Wardens often has background stories that, although based on the CRPG, will provide depth to the setting.

Hope this also helps you.

The best source is the computer game codex.

You can find a site with the info here:
http://da-codex.appspot.com/

Designed to look like the game codex.

Also the Dragon Age Wiki has lots of info as well:

Ferelden as per the Dragon Age: Origins special edition walk-through. It is actually a great source for material. A ton more than what has appeared in any of the products from GR so far.
Denerim: population 70,000
Highever: population 20,000
Gwaren: population 10,000
Lothering: population 500
Redcliffe: population 200

I'm going to keep mentioing this until everyone knows about it :)

The section that Andferne is referring to is called 'A Traveller's Guide to Ferelden' and is found in print ONLY in the special edition version of the Dragon Age: Origins Prima Guidebook -- which is bollocks as the Traveller's Guide is simply THE BEST place for information about Ferelden that I've seen so far.

Thankfully, the guide is also available electronically at:

http://www.dragonagewalkthrough.com

And is worth every penny because of the art and general information and also the fact that it also comes with the treasured Traveller's Guide. I've distilled out that chapter into plain text and the file is a whopping 226k as just plain text.

This is also the same version of the guide if you buy it through Steam, it looks like it just links back to above page and logs you in too which is convenient.

$20 for access to an online guide, money is tight right now and I don’t know if the information hidden behind the pay wall is not already available in the forums, in the DA wiki, in the online Codex….

Is there enough info in that paid guide that ISNT already available and that provides real value to a DARPG GM working on a Ferelden based campaign?
