A Song of Ice and Fire RPG on ICv2 News

ICv2 News posted an article the other day on Green Ronin’s upcoming A Song of Ice and Fire RPG.
Read all about it.

A New Year’s Message From the President, Part Three

Over the past two weeks I’ve had a chance to tell you all about our plans for True20 Adventure Roleplaying and Mutants & Masterminds. Now I’d like to talk about the rest of our 2008 schedule, and since I’m running out of January let me get right to it.
Without a doubt Green Ronin’s biggest event of the year is the launch of A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying, based on George R.R. Martin’s wildly popular fantasy saga. The game features a brand new system, custom made to reflect the realities of the setting. We strongly felt that a series like Ice and Fire should not be shoehorned into an existing set of rules. Adventuring in the Seven Kingdoms should feel like nothing else and we wanted the rules reinforce that idea.
You can get your first taste of the game on Free RPG Day (June 21). We will be offering A Song of Ice and Fire Quick Play, which is a short adventure and all the rules you need to play it. You’ll be able to get this at participating stores absolutely free, so checking out the game couldn’t be easier. Ask your local game store if they are taking part in Free RPG Day and encourage them to do so if they aren’t.
The game itself launches in August and we should have copies at Gen Con. The core book is a 192 page, full color hardback and it gives a complete rules set that includes house creation, social conflict, and mass combat. We’re following that up quickly with Peril at King’s Landing, an adventure that will help you kick off your new campaigns. Later in the fall we’re releasing A Song of Ice and Fire Campaign Guide. This 256 page, full color hardback is your indispensable guide to the Seven Kingdoms and the world beyond. These three books together should blast off A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying in grand style.
Now as excited as we are about the Ice and Fire game, it wouldn’t be a year at Green Ronin without some love for Freeport, our longest running line. Last year we began a new chapter for the City of Adventure with the Pirate’s Guide to Freeport. This provided a new core book for Freeport and took the city in a bold direction. The Pirate’s Guide to Freeport and its follow-up, Cults of Freeport, were pure setting books without any game stats at all. The plan was to publish a series of companion books and PDFs that provided rules and stats for many different games.
Last year we released the True20 Freeport Companion but since then things have been a little quiet on the companion front. We’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes, however, so that is about to change. The d20 Freeport Companion is releasing in PDF form this week, with the print version to follow next month. This is our last scheduled release for the 3.5 rules, so if you are a fan of that edition this is a good time to represent.
We have also made agreements with several publishers that will allow us to support even more games. We made our first outside deal with Pinnacle Entertainment Group, which means Freeport is getting savage! We’ll be releasing the Savage Worlds Freeport Companion PDF in about a month. Pinnacle’s own Paul “Wiggy” Wade-Williams, author of the Pirates of the Spanish Main RPG, wrote the conversion and he did a cracking good job. We’ve also made a deal with Troll Lord Games and work is being done as we speak on a Castles & Crusades Freeport Companion. Both games a great fit for the City of Adventure and we’re glad to have them aboard.
But wait, there’s more booty to come! In March we have the next systemless book, Buccaneers of Freeport. This book examines eight notorious pirates, corsairs, and privateers and presents all the information you need to incorporate these characters into your campaigns. You may also recall from last week’s message that we are doing a Mutants & Masterminds sourcebook on comic book fantasy in the second half of year. This book is not a formal Freeport companion, but will include info on how to use Mutants & Masterminds to run campaigns set in the City of Adventure.
That covers all of our major 2008 plans at the moment. The only open question is whether we’ll be supporting 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons this year or not. As you probably know, Green Ronin was one of the trailblazing companies that proved the viability of third party products. We laid the foundations of the d20 market, so it would only seem natural for us to be first in on 4th edition as well. At the moment though we are still waiting to see the new version of the Open Game License and we can’t make any decisions until we find out the terms under which we’d be publishing. Once Wizards of the Coast shares that info with us, we will have some serious discussions and chart our course.
I can say this with absolute certainty though: 2008 is going to be a great year for Green Ronin Publishing. With cool licenses like Wild Cards and A Song of Ice and Fire, new vistas for Mutants & Masterminds, and continued love for Freeport and True20 Adventure Roleplaying, we’ve got a lot of gaming goodness coming at you. We hope you join us in making this a year to remember.

A New Year’s Message From the President, Part Two

Last week I posted a New Year’s message about the state of True20 Adventure Roleplaying. This week I’m going to talk about Mutants & Masterminds, Green Ronin’s superhero RPG. This has been our top line for several years now and the game shows no signs of slowing down. Let’s take a look at what’s coming in 2008 for M&M.
The big Mutants & Masterminds news this year is, of course, Wild Cards. Tor Books kicks off a brand new saga for this distinguished alternate history supers setting this week with Inside Straight, a "mosaic novel" edited by George R.R. Martin. The Dabel Brothers are also starting a Wild Cards comic series in April. Come June, when the new line for Mutants & Masterminds debuts, we will be in very good company indeed. The even better news is that we were able to get original Wild Cards co-author John Jos. Miller to write for us, so we’re getting terrific material from a key source. This summer Wild Cards will take its place alongside Freedom City and Paragons as one of the core campaign settings for Mutants & Masterminds. We will be following up the campaign setting book in the fall with All-In, an anthology of five Wild Cards adventures. This book will ensure that players have plenty to do in their new campaigns. The third book in the series is scheduled for 2009 and we’ll be talking more about that at a later date.
Even before we get to Wild Cards summer, Green Ronin has a lot more M&M goodness coming at you. Up first is Worlds of Freedom, which presents several fun new variants of Freedom City and an expanded look at the Terminus, followed by the long awaited Book of Magic and then a brand new villain book called Freedom’s Most Wanted. Mutants & Masterminds fans knew a bit about these titles already. What we haven’t yet announced is the M&M Deluxe GM Screen. Last year we did a True20 GM screen using the same material as the covers of hardback books. When we held that beauty in our hands, we said, “M&M really deserves a screen as sexy as this one.” So come May you’ll be seeing a new, super sturdy GM screen—but that’s not all. Included with the screen will be a second edition update of the classic M&M adventure Time of Crisis, by stalwart author Christopher McGlothlin. This will give new GMs a great way to kick off their first campaigns.
Surely that’s enough to satisfy most comic lovin’ fans, but there’s more to come. Here at GR HQ we are always talking about new ways to play our games and new genres to explore. That leads us to the last of our major 2008 releases. In these two books we will explore anime/manga and comic book fantasy. The names of these have not been finalized but we’ve been referring to them as "Mecha & Manga" and "Warriors & Warlocks." Each one will explore a new style of M&M game and both titles will give you all the info you need to get these fun genre campaigns going. Look for them in the second half of the year.
That covers the print side of things but we have some exciting plans for e-products as well. Our relationship with Ronin Arts continues and Phil Reed and crew will be doing more support products. We also plan to launch the Freedom City Atlas, our electronic map project. In this series of PDFs, cartographer Phillip Lienau will explore various areas in Freedom City in greater detail. Phillip’s maps for the Freedom City campaign setting book were stellar and these will further bring the setting to life.
So those are our plans for M&M in brief. As you can see, we have some great products lined up and we’re particularly excited to bring Wild Cards back to its roots in RPGs. Now you may be saying to yourself, "That’s all great, but I want even more!" Happy to oblige. We do have more projects to come, but the time isn’t right to announce them. Stay with us, friends, as the World’s Greatest Superhero RPG soars into 2008!

A New Year’s Message From the President, Part One

It’s the start of a new year and that means it’s time for me to tell you all about Green Ronin’s plans for 2008. In the past I’ve done one big message, but with so much going on I’m going to be doing three. The first will cover True20 Adventure Roleplaying, the second Mutants & Masterminds, and the third will address A Song of Ice and Fire, Freeport, and more. Let’s get the ball rolling with True20.
So a funny thing happened when we were taking stock at the beginning of the year. We discovered that we had less than 50 copies of the True20 core rulebook left in our warehouse! With all the new releases of the Fall and Winter and the excitement of the holiday season, the steady sales of True20 sneaked up on us and suddenly we had an important decision to make. Should we reprint the book as is or make some changes? We’ve decided to release a revised edition of the core rulebook in April. Let me be clear that is not a new edition. The plan is this: The rules content of the book will be unchanged. We will, however, be replacing the sample settings with the entire content of the True20 Companion. This will make the core rulebook a terrific toolkit and a great base for moving forward. The revised rulebook will also incorporate all the errata of both previous books. True20 Adventure Roleplaying, Revised Edition will be a softcover book that retails for only $29.95.
Our remaining print releases for 2008 are the three role handbooks. The Expert’s Handbook is up first, followed by the Adept’s Handbook, and then the Warrior’s Handbook. These books add a lot of new options and make character creation even more fun. The Expert’s Handbook should be going to print this month and release in stores in February. The others will be staggered throughout the year.
We do have one more exciting bit of news for True20 fans. We’ve decided to change the terms of True20 licensing by removing the fees. Starting in May anyone can publish True20 material for free using the current Open Game License. We will be posting information on how that is going to work in a couple of months. This should be good news for True20 fans, as it’ll mean even more settings, adventures, and source material for the game. If you haven’t checked out any of the already available third party material for True20, do yourself a favor. There’s some great stuff out there and it’s only going to get better.
As you can see 2008 should be a great year for True20. It is its own game, we’re happy about that, and we have no plans to change its course. Thanks to our True Fans for encouragement and support. We really do appreciate it and we are thrilled to see the positive community that you have created.
Be True,
Chris Pramas
