Justice for all. Black lives matter.

Justice for All
Everyone at Green Ronin was outraged by the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, and we support the protests demanding justice in his name, and in the names of countless Black people murdered and mistreated by the police. Black lives matter, and it’s long past time white America acknowledged that, and took responsibility for the deep-seated racism at the roots of our nation’s history, poisoning our nation’s present.

From the very beginning, the American ideal of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” was reserved only for some. That is unjust and cannot be allowed to continue. The injustices of the past must be redressed and, more importantly, present-day systemic racism and white supremacy must be torn out of our nation, root and branch. For there to be peace, there must first be justice. Justice for George Floyd. Justice for Breonna Taylor. Justice for Ahmaud Arbery, and so many, many others. Because until there is justice for them, all of them, there cannot be justice—or peace—for all.

Justice for all. Black lives matter.

Justice Now Sale
In conjunction with this statement we are launching a new Charitable Giving sale. From now until July 6, the Mutants & Masterminds Basic Hero’s Handbook is on sale for $20 in print and $15 in PDF. $10 of each sale will go to Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County. Comics have often been used to tell stories about the fight for justice and heroism in the face of oppression, and you can write your own chapters with the Mutants & Masterminds RPG.

We also encourage you to donate directly to BLM Seattle or the nationwide organization. Seattle Met has a good list of other ways to support the protests here in our home town.

You may also consider supporting social justice organizations we’ve donated money to in previous Charitable Giving campaigns.

Australian Bushfires Relief Sale

Fantasy AGE Basic Rulebook 20% off, with 30% of proceeds to Australian Bushfires ReliefGet Fantasy AGE RPG Basic Rulebook for 20% off in our Australian Bushfires Relief Sale, now through the end of January.

As you’ve probably heard, bushfires have been ravaging Australia for weeks. This is another example of natural disasters exacerbated by climate change, and the results have been catastrophic. So far 18 million acres of land have been burned and it is estimated that over a billion animals have been killed.

Nicole and I traveled to Melbourne the past couple of years for PAX Australia, and while there visited the Healesville Sanctuary to see the amazing array of wildlife down under. The numbers of dead and displaced animals are so large it’s hard to grapple with the scope of it. As a response to this tragedy, we are running a sale on the Fantasy AGE Basic Rulebook to benefit Wildlife Victoria and their Bushfire Appeal. From now through January 31, the game (both print and PDF) is on sale at 20% off and fully 30% of the proceeds will go to Wildlife Victoria. The money will go to “wildlife shelters and carers around the state that have been affected by the Victorian bushfires and extreme heat events.”

Charitable Giving Initiative: Freedom Sale For RAICES

From now until July 15th select titles from Green Ronin’s Mutants & Masterminds line will be 20% off cover price, with 20% of the proceeds going to RAICES for the work they are doing to address the humanitarian crisis affecting asylum-seekers and detained children on the US-Mexico border.

At a time when it can feel like only a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist has a hope of success, it’s ok to remember that there are folks out there with none of that, who do what they can with what they have. What we have is a superhero game that we hope supports and inspires you in your fights to stay heroic and support justice on this fragile little planet of ours however you can. You don’t have to be a superhero to make a difference in the world but if you want to play one for a little while, we can help you with that, too.

About The Innocence Project

Founded in 1992, the Innocence Project exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing and spurs reform of the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice. After more than 25 years of tireless efforts, it now serves as the core of a worldwide network of similar organizations, all dedicated to assisting and seeking justice for the wrongly convicted.

A noticeable majority of the cases successfully challenged by the Innocence Project has involved innocent men of color, accused of rape or murder, who were wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death. By reopening these cases and introducing DNA evidence (that could have acquitted these men at the time of their original trials) the Innocence Project was able to exonerate them.

Race, religion, and ethnicity have all been shown to affect arrest and conviction rates. But the one factor that determines a person’s ability to fight a wrongful conviction is wealth. Lack of financial resources denies so many innocent people access to the legal resources necessary to secure an exoneration.

Poverty should not doom an innocent person to years of incarceration and/or execution. That’s why the Innocence Project, and its partner organizations, provide their services and support pro bono—to help bring justice to those wrongly convicted without the means to fight back.

If you’re interested in learning or doing more for this noble cause, please visit the Innocence Project’s website, where you’ll find a wealth of information about their efforts, along with a list of other local and regional organizations working to help address the issue of justice for those wrongly incarcerated.

We also recommend picking up the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevens, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative—another organization which does similar work with a focus on mass incarceration, children in prison, and death penalty cases.

Green Ronin Charitable Giving: Thurgood Marshall College Fund Sale

Our previous sale, benefiting the Trevor Project, ran a while longer than we intended, but generated a nice amount to donate to them. Our new sale in our Charitable Giving Initiative benefits the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

While the sale runs, both the print and PDF versions of three Mutants & Masterminds books, Deluxe Hero’s Handbook, Atlas of Earth-Prime, and Freedom City, are on sale for $5 off, and for each sale item sold we will donate $10 to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

About the Thurgood Marshall College Fund: Established in 1987, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community. TMCF member-schools include the publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). Publicly-supported HBCUs enroll over 80% of all students attending HBCUs. Through scholarships, capacity building and research initiatives, innovative programs, and strategic partnerships, TMCF is a vital resource in the K-12 and higher education space. The organization is also a source for top employers seeking top talent for competitive internships and good jobs.

Ronin Roundtable: Charitable Giving in 2017

Earlier this year we made a commitment to take a more structured approach to our charitable giving. Since then we’ve run a series of sales in our online store to benefit various charities. We have supported causes like environmental protection and immigrant rights, raised money for hurricane relief after a terrible storm season, and stood up for science and the scientific method (something whose need beggars belief in the 21st century). I’d now like to report the results.

In general, we ran fewer sales than we anticipated but ran each one for longer, so the donation would be meaningful. We rounded up in all cases to kick in a bit more and give each donation a nice round number.

Union of Concerned Scientists: $350

National Immigrant Justice Center: $400

Natural Resources Defense Council: $930

Houston Food Bank: $500

Houston Humane Society: $500

Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund: $600

We’ve also been involved in other charitable events throughout the year. Chris Pramas ran a special Blue Rose adventure on Hyper RPG’s 48 Hour Charity Drive for the Halo Foundation and their work helping at-risk and homeless children. He was also a special guest at the Worldbuilders fundraiser on the JoCo Cruise. We donated books to the Extra Life Nerds for their charity stream last month. We participated in a Bundle of Holding to benefit Reading Is Fundamental.

As this year ends things seem even darker than they did in 2016. It can all feel overwhelming and as if there’s little we can do as individuals. More and more often, empathy is portrayed as weakness, bullying as strength. It is our empathy that makes us human, that makes us strive to make the world a better place, not only through our words, but through our actions. We will continue our efforts at charitable giving in 2018 and beyond and we hope you will support us. Today we are launching a new sale to benefit the Trevor Project, a charity that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. We are putting the Blue Rose RPG on sale for $40, and $10 of each sale will go to the Trevor Project.

Thanks for your continued support and may 2018 be a better year for us all.

Expanding Our Support For Hurricane Victims

Coffee Ronin Coffee MugYou probably know about our Green Ronin Online Store, but we have a second online store now. Our new Green Ronin Gift Shop features “swag,” like t-shirts, coffee mugs, poster maps, and more, bearing logos and art from our games. This store is separate from the Green Ronin Online Store for logistical reasons, and its products are printed and fulfilled on demand by the fine folks at Printful.

We are currently raising money in support of the victims of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For a limited time, Fantasy AGE Basic Rulebook and the Fantasy AGE Bestiary are on sale in our Green Ronin Online Store at 10% off, and after the promotion, we will tally up the sales of those two books and donate 20% of proceeds to Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund.

Now we’ve decided to go one step further: Starting now, for the duration of the sale, we will donate all but $1 of the profits of every sale made in our Green Ronin Gift Shop to the same fund. There’s never been a better time to get a framed poster map of Freeport or a Coffee Ronin coffee mug.

Please check out the Green Ronin Gift Shop today, and help us help our fellow Americans in need.

Harvey Relief: A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying (Game of Thrones RPG) Sale

Our hearts go out to everyone in Harvey’s path. We are shocked by the photos and footage we’ve seen of the flooding in Texas in the wake of the storm, and some of our friends and family have been directly affected. For our latest Charitable Giving Initiative campaign, we have placed all products in our A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying line at 10% off in our Green Ronin Online Store. When you shop the sale, we will donate 20% of proceeds to the Houston Food Bank and Houston Humane Society.

If you want to help Harvey survivors more, you can donate directly to these two organizations, or find another worthy charity to support as well:
