Green Ronin is at PAX Unplugged this weekend, exhibiting in booth 3649 in the Expo Hall and running games all weekend (with the able assistance of our Freebooters) in the Tabletop Freeplay hall. We will have copies of Abzu’s Bounty (the soon-to-be-released adventure path for The Expanse RPG), Critical Role: Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting, Threefold, Superteam Handbook, the novels Height of the Storm and Shadowtide, and more!
Green Ronin is very excited to be attending PAX Unplugged again this year. PAX Unplugged is Penny Arcade’s completely analog convention. It’s become known as the convention where people actually play games – a lot of them! Crazy, right? So, if you are in Philadelphia the weekend of December 6 – 8, please come join us and play some games.
You will be able to find us at Exhibitor’s Hall Booth 3649. Even better is that this year we will also have a table within the free play hall in an area designated for exhibitor demos. We will have our own dedicated table throughout the entire weekend!
Speaking of the demo table – we could really use a few more people to help us run games. Does this sound like fun to you? In addition to the fun of running games, Green Ronin will reimburse your badge and give you a t-shirt. Win-win for all of us!
If you’re already a Freebooter and interested, please contact me to discuss details.
Not a Freebooter but still want to run games for us? No problem! Becoming a Freebooter is fun, easy, and packed with perks. The first step is to fill out this form. If you want to help with PAX Unplugged, please also send me an email at email@example.com to make sure I expedite your application.
Finally, if you’re attending PAX Unplugged, please feel free to drop by our booth and say hello. Happy gaming!
Who’s Yer Con is a free gaming convention, and the flagship event put on by Who’s Yer Gamers each year. Its history includes three years under the moniker “MavenCon” before its official branding in 2009, and has been held at various locations in the Indianapolis metro area due to constant growth. March 22-24, 2019
Events are both in the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting and can be found by searching ‘Tal’Dorei’ in the Event Catalog:
- The Siege of Emon – 10th level Emon residents do what they can to help the cause before and during the famed battle. – Friday, 3/22 @ 6pm
- Vox Machina Battle Royale – Straight up battle between the members of Vox Machina at level 20. – Saturday, 3/23 @ 6pm
Welcome back to our look at Green Ronin’s 2019 plans. Yesterday I talked about The Expanse, Nisaba Press, Freeport, and Blue Rose. Today I’ll be talking about Mutants & Masterminds, and 5E.
Mutants & Masterminds
Mutants & Masterminds is our longest-running RPG, now in its 3rd edition. Last year we released the Basic Hero’s Handbook, a new entry point for the game that makes getting started with M&M even easier. We’re going to follow that up this year with some PDF adventure support and a Revised Edition of the Gamemasters Guide. The GMG went out of print last year and rather than do a straight reprint, we thought we’d take the opportunity to add some new material (new adventures, villain archetypes, and more) and make it integrate more smoothly with the Basic Hero’s Handbook. We’re also making it hardback!
Before the revised GMG, though, we’ve got the Superteam Handbook. This handy sourcebook contains eight pre-built superteams that range from PL 5-12. These can be used to kickstart a campaign, or as allies, rivals, or enemies of the PCs. Later in the year we’ll have the Time Travelers Codex. This book provides a framework and ideas for including time travel in your supers campaign, as well as detailed info on select historical epochs and the sorts of adventures you might have there.
Sentinels of Earth-Prime
Mutants & Masterminds is also moving into a new area this year: card games! Sentinels of Earth-Prime is a joint project between Green Ronin and Greater Than Games that originally funded on Kickstarter. Sentinels of Earth-Prime is game that combines M&M’s core setting and the rules of Sentinels of the Multiverse. This is a core game so no previous experience is required. If you have Sentinels of the Multiverse games though, you’ll find that all the decks in our game work hand in glove with your current collection. Why, it’s almost like SotM designer Christopher Badell did all the deck design for our game (because he did!). The game is designed and playtested, and right now we’re working on getting all the art done. As this is a card game, there is quite a bit of art. You should see Sentinels of Earth-Prime this summer.
If you enjoyed last year’s hugely successful Critical Role: Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting, we’ve got more Fifth Edition fun for you this year. First, we’ve got Lost Citadel Roleplaying, a campaign setting we also funded on Kickstarter. It’s a world where the dead roam at will and all the survivors have taken refuge in the city of Redoubt. Only its walls and the strength of its inhabitants stand between the dead and annihilation. Lost Citadel Roleplaying is in layout now and should be available for pre-order soon.
Later this spring we’re running a crowdfunding campaign on Game On Tabletop to bring back a Green Ronin classic for Fifth Edition: The Book of Fiends! Older fans will remember this book from the Third Edition era. It was one of our best selling and most critically acclaimed books in the d20 days, so it only made sense to bring it back. Demons, daemons, and devils will be yours in abundance! Rob Schwalb, one of the book’s original designers and also a member of the D&D Fifth Edition design team, updated all the existing fiends and added new ones too. You’d expect no less from the man behind Shadow of the Demon Lord!
That wraps up part 2 of our look at 2019. Come back for the final installment tomorrow to learn about Modern AGE, Fantasy AGE, and Dragon Age.
[Updated Dec. 5 2018: We have extended this sale for another week, though Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Thank you for helping us help wildfire survivors!]
We have created poster versions of the Realm of Tal’Dorei Map found in the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting book. Available in framed, canvas-printed, and unframed versions, this gorgeous map by award-winning cartographer Andy Law makes a wonderful gift for the Critter in your life, and it will look great on your own wall. Through December 4th, 2018, 50% of our profits from these maps will go to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund. Additionally, we’ve placed the print and PDF versions of the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting on sale at 20% off in our Green Ronin Online Store, and 20% of the proceeds of that book and PDF in our Wildfire Relief Fund Sale will go to the same charity.
Please join us in supporting wildfire survivors in California, and get a beautiful map of Tal’Dorei while you’re at it.
All of us at Green Ronin wish a Happy Tal’Dorei Day to all Critters! To help celebrate, we’ve turned on ordering in our Green Ronin Online Store for the Tal’Dorei Campaign Guide.
Now that you have the Tal’dorei Campaign Setting in your hands, what can you do with it? Play games, of course. But what adventures? Wizards has released a number of adventure books since 5th edition launched, and some of them are easy to integrate into Exandria.
Caution: Spoilers for Out of the Abyss are contained beyond this point. If you wish to play as a player, stop reading here. You have been warned!
One of the Adventure books that Wizards has released for 5th Edition D&D is called Out of the Abyss. It was primarily written by Green Ronin, on behalf of Wizards. The adventure, as written, is set in the Forgotten Realms, but it takes place mostly in the Underdark, and so requires very little massaging to use it in Tal’dorei.
You may wish to change the names of some of the cities of the underdark. I don’t think it will really matter much for most of them, although many of them have been in use in the Forgotten Realms for many years. There is a rough map on page 19 of the adventure that shows approximate locations of the underdark cites in relation to the overland Forgotten Realms map. You probably don’t need to change this, as the facing page has approximate travel times between the various locations. It’s probably best to use that as a rough guide for travel.
The largest change needed in the book is Chapter 8. The first thing to do is replace Bruenor Battlehammer and Gauntlgrym with Gradim Greyspine and Kraghammer. Then, replace the various Forgotten Realms specific factions (The Harpers, The Lords’ Alliance, The Zhentarim, The Emerald Enclave, and The Order of the Gauntlet) with Tal’dorei specific ones. (I’d suggest The Arcana Pansophical, The Ashari, The Council of Tal’dorei, The Chamber of Whitestone, and The Clasp.) Special note: In the adventure, the Zhentarim have a trading outpost in an underdark city. Have one of the factions that you replace the Zhents with (perhaps the Clasp?) have a similar outpost.
Please feel free to make any other changes you might need or want to. Playing with a toolbox is fun, and can help you level up as a DM. Bonus conversion: here is the sword Dawnbringer (found early in the adventure) turned into a vestige:
Weapon ( longsword ), legendary ( requires attunement by a non-evil creature )
Dawnbringer appears as a golden longsword hilt. When it’s attuned and held in your hand, you can use a bonus action to activate it, causing a glowing blade to appear. Dawnbringer functions as a longsword with the finesse property. You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls with this weapon. It deals radiant damage instead of slashing damage. When you hit an undead or demonic target with it, it deals an extra 1d6 radiant damage.
Sentience/Personality: See the adventure, page 222.
Increase the bonus to attack and damage rolls to +2.
Increase the extra damage to undead or demonic targets to 2d6
Once per day, you can use your action to cast lesser restoration on a target you are touching. ( Recharges each day at dawn. )
Increase the bonus to attack and damage rolls to +3.
On a critical hit against an undead or demonic target, maximize all damage dice. ( Treat them as if you rolled the maximum number on the die. )
The first time each day that one of your allies within ten feet of you drops to zero hit points, Dawnbringer heals them for 2d8+2 damage. ( Recharges each day at dawn. )
Tune in next time for a more in-depth conversion, Princes of the Apocalypse!
We wanted to give you an update on the shipping of pre-orders for the Critical Role: Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting. This is the biggest pre-order we’ve ever had by far. It’s a large and complicated job, so we are using an outside fulfillment company for shipping. This has led to some minor issues that had to be ironed out with our store software and their fulfillment software not being 100% in sync. That got sorted out and shipping began.
If you pre-ordered, there’s no need to worry. Shipping is ongoing and you will get your books. We had said on Twitter that you’d get a confirmation email when your order shipped. Due to the software issue I mentioned above, however, that is actually not the case. We will get tracking info from the shipping company when they have finished the job, but by that point most of you will have your books anyway. The best thing to do is just hang on while the job is processed. You will be seeing your books soon.
Thanks for your patience!
Pre-ordering is now active for the Critical Role: Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting!
Important! You have three choices of where to start, so please make sure you choose the one you want:
- Pre-Order for Shipping:
This is the option to get the physical book shipped to you once they are done printing. You’ll receive an offer to get the PDF version right away for just $5, but you must choose “Add to Cart” in the pop-up window to get the offer.
- Pre-Order for Gen Con Pick-Up:
This is the option to choose if you are going to be at Gen Con 50 this August in Indianapolis and can come by the Green Ronin Publishing booth (#1321 in the Exhibit Hall) to pick up your book in person, with photo ID. When you check out you’ll be offered the PDF version for just $5, but you must choose “Add to Cart” in the pop-up window to get the offer.
Don’t like lugging books around with you as you search for adventure in Tal’Dorei? This is the option for you.
We have a FAQ set up just for you. If you’re still not sure about something, you can write our Customer Service Templar at firstname.lastname@example.org. But please do read the FAQ first.
